Jammu and Kashmir State comprises the northern most edge of India containing three distinct Climatic regions viz. Arctic cold desert areas of Ladakh, moderate Kashmir valley and sub-tropical region of Jammu. The State is surrounded by Pakistan, Afghanistan and China from the West to the East. Major portions of Jammu & Kashmir State consists of the western Himalayas, which also flourishes in rivers, lakes, passes, glaciers, plateaus and plains.

History of Kashmir
Kashmir is the principal region in Jammu & Kashmir state. It is alleged that when the Moghul Emperor Jahangir (17th century) first set his eyes in the valley of Kashmir, he could not resist and expressed breathlessly, "Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto" (If there is a heaven on the earth, it's here, it's here, it's here). The Valley which has been portrayed as the 'Paradise' on Earth is full of many shades of wood. The most magnificent of the Kashmir trees is the Chinar found throughout the valley.
